So you have a website. Good for you. There are over 1 billion websites on the Internet today with over 30 million new websites being added every month. So how do people find your website amongst all those other websites?
Well most of us go to search engines such as Google, Yahoo or Bing when we want to find something on the Internet. That raises the inevitable question, how do the search engines find your website? That’s where Search Engine Optimization comes in.
Search Engine Optimization,or SEO as it is known, is the process of changing or optimizing your website to improve it’s ranking on Google and the other search engines for specific search terms that are relevant to your business. SEO is made up of four main areas of consideration, on-site factors, your link profile, social media indicators and the amount of traffic your website is currently getting.
On-site factors include proper titles, descriptions, keywords, heading tags, alt tags, the website’s domain name, page urls, link text, image names, and numerous other items. Basically, if you can read it on your website, so can Google. If they can read it, they are indexing it. If they are indexing it, they are, except in a few known cases, using it to determine what your site is about and subsequently what your ranking will be in their search results. Finally they are looking at how often you are updating your content. Sites that regularly update their content are assumed to be of greater interest to visitors and thus garner a higher rank.
Your link profile is made by the number of incoming links you have, the quality of the websites those links are coming from, how relevant to your industry those websites are and finally the text used in the links themselves. One important thing to keep in mind, this does not include paid links. Paid links can actually hurt your search engine ranking. So, if your site has a number of links to it from popular websites that are related to your industry, chances are you are going to be very highly ranked indeed.
